Aloha shirts might have a dubious sartorial reputation on the mainland, but in Hawaii, they’re appropriate even in the most elegant settings. J.Crew proves in its latest In Good Company collaboration that the right aloha pattern can be tasteful rather than flashy; it’s the difference between the quiet lushness of Oahu’s North Shore and the garish buzz of tourist-ridden Waikiki.

Check out J.Crew’s comprehensive Spark Notes on pairing shirt and tie (and pocket square, if you’re so inclined). From a job interview to a first date, helpful tips on the appropriate mix of colors, patterns and prints.

Did you catch the Wall Street Journal’s piece on the new (old) spin on golf wear? In the words of Hobson Brown (of Austin’s Criquet), it’s all about “the gentleman golfer who makes it look easy, doesn’t chase trends, who likes to walk the holes and carry his own bag.” That’s par for the course for the Field Guide man.

While we don’t have anything against Nike, we’re digging the shift toward classic, streamlined styles that can take you from the 18th hole to dinner without raising any eyebrows. Think Don Draper on the ninth green. The above look is classic with a twist, thanks to an eye-catching shade of yellow. To balance out the sweater’s vibrant hue, we kept the rest of the look neutral in white and navy.

Spring has finally sprung in our part of the woods, and we’ve been distracted by green grass, blue skies and sunny days. Hey, we knew you’d understand. Tune back in tomorrow for a fresh take on dressing for the links. Hope you had an awesome weekend.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, so we rounded up a plethora of gift options for your family matriarch. Whether she’s a master chef, an expert gardener or a tech junkie, there’s something for her on our Gift Guide (and at a variety of price points). Some friendly advice: order now and avoid paying rush shipping.

*Birchbox makes a great gift for cosmetically inclined women. A bit like a magazine suscription, you can purchase three month, six month, one year or deluxe options. Mom will then receive a box of beauty and lifestyle items by mail once monthly. (We’re also fans of Birchbox Men.)

Brooks Brothers has debuted a Great Gatsby Collection in time for the premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s film. Consider us fans — we particularly like the classic silk ties, linen suits and wool blazers. However, a word of caution: avoid piling on the period pieces or risk looking like you’re en route to a costume party. (We’d rather not even talk about the walking cane or boater hat. Just skip the theatrics, OK? Cool.)

April can be a tricky time to stay sartorially on target, especially if you live in a cold climate. We like this look because it spells s-u-m-m-e-r, but won’t have you shivering if the mercury drops. A striped tee and bright pants exude a nautical vibe, while a pullover and chukkas keep you warm. On more temperate days, just ditch the sweater and swap the desert boots for sneaks or sandals.

Our friend Jess has a red and white gingham shirt that he calls his “picnic shirt.” There is something about preppy checks that makes us want to crack open a beer and throw a burger on the grill — this miniature version travels easily from tailgates to lunches in the park. Toss this West Elm blanket on the ground for some al fresco lounging sans grass stains. A portable ice bucket keeps drinks cold, and these hearty steel cups won’t break in transit. Oh, and at just $39 a pop, you can look like Jess for less!
